about

When it comes to remixes I always do the same procedure: listen to the original one time and when it’s finished I try to gather in my mind all the things that I found catchy, or that impact me for any reason. Sometimes it’s only a riff or a melody that trigger my imagination, and I build the remix around that. Other times, its the music itself that drag me to a certain mood that push me in a parallel way. And only very few times, you came across to a really suggestive song with some gorgeous vocals, done with enough passion to bristle your hair. And when that happens I don’t consider myself lucky… I consider it as a gift, and I try to take care of it. That’s what happens with “No Sense”. It took me less than minute to realize that I was facing a brilliant song, full of arrangement and melodic possibilities. Ksenia’s vocals are amazing, really soulful and deeply emotional, and Alexander’s work on synths are clinical, daring and well crafted.

On the first remix I did (D-Fried 3am Remix) I tried to keep the same dark and tense mood from the original. It didn’t take much time to find enough elements to build around the vocals. Quickly I was having too many synth melodies and sequences to put in a single song, so most of the work was to choose which elements were more suitable for the remix, trying not to over-produce it.

The second one (Dwight Fried Remix) was a real fun: I did few remixes as Dwight Fried, using micro sampling techniques, and chopping cuts from old records, and I wanted to try something with a 2-Step beat. I started with a couple of Rhodes chords until I found something that fits with the vocal melody but in a totally different harmony, quite bright and optimistic, so very opposite to the original. Once I got this, the rest was flowing easily.

My music is rarely danceable… but when I do a remix, I try to do something more dancefloor oriented, which I did with the first two remixes. Then I think that maybe I could do another remix but more in my sofa-oriented style. Something more quiet, intimate and emotional, with intricate beats… more into the IDM field. So the third one (D-Fried 7am Remix) was in that direction. Again, a new chord progression was giving a new mood to the vocals that works so well in a different tone.

Then I though: 3 remixes are more than enough. But I wanted to try to put the Ksenia’s vocal over an unfinished idea based on lots of strings cuts, harps, horns, etc kind of symphonic atmosphere, that was in my hard drive for a couple of years. I don’t know what drive me to do that…was a kind of hunch. So I did, and after a little tempo adjust I drop the vocals and it was pure magic: it works lovely all the way down. So suddenly we have a new remix (Dwight Fried Royal Hall Remix)

After all that, I thought that the last two remixes were very low tempo, so we need something upbeat to bring some energy into it… Also, I like odd numbers. So I wanted to do something dark and mysterious, like the original song, but also groovy and danceable and rooted in the bass music field. Inspired by some d&b producers that start using the old 2-step/uk garage beats in a new obscure ways, I came up with the fifth remix (D-Fried Unterwasser Remix).

To cut a long story short, “No Sense” is one of the best things that happened to me lately. My best wishes for KS/Optionica, and I hope they will find the way to keep such an outstanding level of inspiration.
